1st COURTYARD
As you enter through George Gate into the second courtyard you see a long path leading to the main castle. This is a very large courtyard, many of the original buildings are gone and have not been rebuilt. Thus this courtyard appears spacous and open. Try to visualize it with it's large stable and one hundred horses.
In the west wall there is an arched gate which steeply leads down to the old town, so anyone could get quickly to the market, church or where ever they needed to be. Also included in this courtyard was a draw well to get water, the main kitchen and the bakery. The kitchen and bakery were positioned here so if they caught on fire they would not pose danger to the main castle and water would be as close as they could get it.
Next to the west wall you see many small houses. This is where the grooms and pages to the duke lived. They needed to be accessible at any hour so proximity was important. The most important and/or prestigeous twelve or thirteen year old boy in all of Burghausen was the Duke's Chair Page. He simply followed the Duke around all day and made sure a chair was always accessible.
